Cal AI deserves credit for a real product insight: the reason people quit food tracking is friction, and a photo removes almost all of it. Point, shoot, macros. It went from nothing to millions of downloads on the strength of that single idea, and it dragged the whole category along with it — including us.

It was acquired by MyFitnessPal in a deal that closed in December 2025, so if you are choosing between Cal AI and MyFitnessPal, you are now choosing between two products from the same company.

Where Cal AI wins

  • Logging speed. It is genuinely fast, and speed is the feature that determines whether you are still logging in week six.
  • Onboarding. Frictionless to the point of being slightly aggressive about it.
  • Simplicity. It does one thing. Some people want exactly one thing.

Where it stops — abruptly

There is no training in it. At all.

This is not a nuance or a weak feature. Cal AI has no strength training tracking whatsoever — no sets, no reps, no loads, no programs, no RPE. It counts calories.

Which means if you lift, Cal AI is at most half of your stack, and the other half is a workout app that has never seen your food. You are back to two apps that cannot see each other, making the decisions that depend on both impossible for either one to make.

Photo estimates have real limits

We use photo logging too, so we will be honest about it: the model is good at identifying what is on the plate and considerably weaker at how much and at hidden fats — the oil in the pan is invisible to a camera. The fix is to treat the estimate as a consistent input to a trend, not as a measurement. We wrote this up in detail in how accurate is AI photo food logging.

An app whose entire product is that estimate inherits all of that error with nothing else to triangulate against.

The pricing is whatever it decides today

Cal AI does not publish standard pricing. The App Store shows in-app purchase tiers from roughly $2.99 to $29.99, and users report being shown different prices. You may get a good deal. You may not. You will not know which.

Where Gymrock is different

Gymrock has the same fast photo logging — snap a meal, get a breakdown in seconds, free — but the photo is an input, not the product.

The product is the decision. One model reads your meals, your logged sets and RPE, and your recovery signals, and sends one message every Monday at 7 a.m.: push, hold, or pull back, with the math shown. Cal AI can tell you that you ate 1,900 kcal. It cannot tell you what that means for your training this week, because it has never seen your training.
