"One gram per pound of bodyweight." Every gym, every forum, for thirty years. It is not dangerous, it is not wrong exactly — it is just not where the evidence lands, and for a lot of people it makes a diet needlessly hard to adhere to.
The number
The most-cited synthesis is Morton and colleagues (2018, British Journal of Sports Medicine), a meta-analysis of resistance-training and protein studies. Its central finding: added protein keeps helping until roughly 1.6 g per kg of bodyweight per day, and past that the curve goes flat. The confidence interval extends up to about 2.2 g/kg, which is why you will see that number quoted as a sensible ceiling.
For an 80 kg lifter:

"One gram per pound" for that lifter is 176 g — i.e. right at the top of the plausible range. It is a defensible ceiling being sold as a floor. If hitting it makes you miserable, you are grinding for a rounding error.
The exception that matters: cutting
Protein requirements are not a constant; they rise as energy availability falls. In a deficit your body will oxidize some protein for fuel and the anabolic signal is blunted, so you need more raw material to get the same protective effect. This is why the cutting target sits higher — commonly 1.8–2.2 g/kg — and why protein is the single most protective dietary lever when you are trying to keep muscle while losing fat.
There is a second, underrated benefit: protein is the most satiating macronutrient. A high-protein deficit is simply easier to adhere to than a low-protein one, and adherence is the variable that actually determines outcomes.
What about timing?
Short version: it is a third-order concern that gets first-order attention.
- The anabolic window is not 30 minutes. The elevated sensitivity to protein after training lasts many hours. Sprinting home to a shaker is not necessary.
- Distribution helps a little. Three to five protein-containing meals is modestly better than one or two, because muscle protein synthesis responds to per-meal doses and then desensitizes.
- Total daily intake dominates. Hitting 150 g in two meals beats hitting 100 g in five, every time.
If your daily total is not consistently on target, timing is not your problem.
Hitting the number without hating your life
The practical failure mode is not knowing the target — it is that the target quietly gets missed by 30 g a day for six weeks and nobody notices, because nobody is looking.
Some things that work:
- Anchor every meal with a protein source first, then build carbs and fat around it. Most people who miss protein targets are building meals around carbs and hoping protein shows up.
- Know your five staples. You do not need a database. You need to know that your usual chicken portion is ~40 g, your yogurt is ~15 g, your shake is ~25 g. Five numbers gets you 80% of the way.
- Front-load. Protein at breakfast is the meal people skip, and it is the easiest 30 g you will ever find.
- Do not rely on memory to audit yourself. Self-reported intake is famously unreliable — people underestimate what they eat overall and overestimate their protein. This is exactly what logging is for, and it does not have to be tedious: see tracking macros without weighing food.
Where protein meets training
The reason protein matters is that it is the material half of an equation whose other half is stimulus. Protein without progressive training is just expensive urine. Training without adequate protein is a stimulus with nothing to build from.
Which is why the useful question is never "am I eating enough protein?" in isolation. It is: am I eating enough protein for the amount of training I am currently doing, at my current energy balance? A 128 g target is fine at maintenance with four sessions a week. The same 128 g in week nine of a deficit while running six sessions is a slow leak.
Answering that requires seeing food and training in the same place.
